MDL Sail Training Awards 2010

Now in its 22nd year, the MDL Sail Training Awards has given over 130 deserving youngsters the chance to get out on the water and become involved in all aspects of life onboard a sailing boat - which has totalled up to around 6,000 nautical miles over the years. MDL Marinas, Europe's largest marina operator, is once again seeking nominations for inspirational youngsters to experience a week's adventure on a sail training yacht, with winners being selected from the areas where MDL operates; South West, Dorset, Hampshire, Thames Valley and East Coast regions.

MDL invites those with regular contact with young people including guide or scout leaders, teachers, youth group leaders, friends or employees to put forward nominations for admirable young people, between the ages of 12 â 18 years, to take part in this unforgettable experience. Each year, the Awards offer six places on board a sailing boat, operated by the Ocean Youth Trust. Youngsters will be invited to work as a team aboard the yacht, hoisting sails, sailing the boat at night as well as cooking and cleaning with the rest of the crew.

The MDL Sail Training Awards both reward and challenge deserving youngsters who have shown exceptional accomplishments and qualities that have inspired or supported others. Past winners have included young people who have been outstanding achievers, as well as those who have been involved in voluntary work, those who have never had the chance to travel abroad, and those with added family responsibilities.

A ceremony will take place during this year's PSP Southampton Boat Show in September to formally award the winners, who will be sailing from Wednesday 25th â Tuesday 31st August 2010. The winners will have the opportunity to help choose the route the yacht will take on the sailing adventure, which is scheduled to start from Southampton and return to Poole Harbour in Dorset.
