Yacht Collisions, Grounded Vessels and Men Overboard

With 1,779 boats competing in Saturday's Round The Island race, Solent Coastguard were well prepared for a challenging day. This year, the annual Round The Island race generated a flurry of incidents, with the Coastguard Helicopter, Coastguard Rescue Teams and RNLI lifeboats being called to assist grounded vessels and men overboard, as well as the FastCat that operates between Portsmouth and Ryde, which became grounded on its 5.45 crossing.

Oman Sail Masirah first home in the Round The Island Race

Oman Sail Masirah led the fleet back to Cowes in the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race as well as taking line honours in the Extreme 40 class. International Search For Missing Yacht

Coastguards and rescue authorities from both sides of the Atlantic are currently involved in the search for a French yacht, Actuel. The ten metre white yacht has two people on board. It departed St Pierre and Miquelon (a group of small islands off the eastern coast of Canada near Newfoundland) on 21 May, bound for Le Havre with a possible stop over in Scotland or Ireland. The JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race takes place on Saturday 20th June. Entries closed at noon on Saturday 13th June and this year's total of 1,779 is the fourth highest in the 78-year history of the race. Rescue from sinking yacht in Lyme Bay

A 62 year old man was rescued on Friday evening as his yacht broke up on rocks in Lyme Bay.

At 7pm on Friday, Portland Coastguard received a broken Mayday call from the 20ft yacht Harnser, reporting he was on the rocks somewhere between Lyme Regis and West Bay, in Lyme Bay. Portland Coastguard was only able to ascertain it was a 20ft vessel, with one person on board, on rocks and the crewman was about to abandon ship, before contact was lost.

The JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race takes place on Saturday 20th June. Standard rate entries closed at midnight on 30th May and despite an economic climate of doom and gloom, the Island Sailing Club was delighted to announce entry numbers were very encouraging.

Coastguard urges boat users to properly maintain their vessels

As the warm weather has encouraged boat users to take their vessels out on to the water, possibly for the first time this year, Humber Coastguard have, this afternoon, been dealing with a string of reports of broken down vessels.

This has required either another vessel to take them under tow or in extremis a lifeboat to be launched.

Inshore Waters Weather Forecast Changes for NW Scotland

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the UK Met Office have announced a change to the Inshore Waters Forecasts that are broadcast on VHF radio by Stornoway and Clyde Coastguard during their Maritime Safety Information (MSI) broadcasts.
