Portable Gas Cooker Safety Alert

A safety alert has been issued to boaters about portable gas cookers with integral gas canisters following incidents where people have been seriously burnt. The Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) is with Hampshire County Council through its Trading Standards service, urging boat owners to take extra care to follow the manufacturers' operating instructions for these stoves and to not use them onboard boats.

Lives lost as Helicopter ditches

Rescue vessels are in the process of recovering a number of fatalities following a helicopter crash earlier this afternoon. Two liferafts were spotted in the water which were both overturned. The search is continuing for the remaining passengers and crew.

The aircraft, a Bond AS 33L Mk 2 was carrying 16 people in total; 14 passengers and two crew. All were wearing survival suits.

Chichester Harbour Rescue

Solent Coastguard were contacted at 1.00 pm today to report that the motorboat, Rochford was on fire in Chichester Harbour. The Coastguard then received a mayday broadcast from another vessel Eskimo reporting that they were alongside the motorboat and taking off its four crew. The Coastguard contacted Hayling RNLI Lifeboat who were already on their way towards the boat as they had been patrolling in the harbour. Plastimo UK Liferaft Recall

Plastimo UK have announced that a fault with the trigger mechanism may affect the use of liferafts manufactured by them between May 23rd and October 30th 2008.

Owners of Plastimo liferafts are being asked to enter the serial number of their liferaft into a special web page on the Plastimo site. They will then be advised by Plastimo if the raft may be affected by the problem.

Call to save water at Kennet & Avon Canal hot spots

British Waterways is calling on its boating customers to help conserve water on the Kennet & Avon Canal as concerns grow over low water levels.

The main water source for the canal is from an abstraction on the River Avon near Claverton. This water is supplemented by a number of other smaller feeders along the 87 miles of the canal, and is then recycled and transferred using a back pumping scheme.

Sewage Spill in Solent as Humber Star sinks at mooring

A clean-up and salvage operation has commenced in the Solent after the barge the Humber Star sank at its mooring overnight. The alarm was raised at 5:40am by a member of the public. The barge was moored at Woolston jetty and did not have any crew on board.

Pollution containment measures have been put in place and salvage efforts are beginning to raise the barge back to the surface.

The vessel was thought to be carrying 4 tons of red diesel and several hundred tons of raw sewage...
