Sewage Spill in Solent as Humber Star sinks at mooring

A clean-up and salvage operation has commenced in the Solent after the barge the Humber Star sank at its mooring overnight. The alarm was raised at 5:40am by a member of the public. The barge was moored at Woolston jetty and did not have any crew on board.

Pollution containment measures have been put in place and salvage efforts are beginning to raise the barge back to the surface.

The vessel was thought to be carrying 4 tons of red diesel and several hundred tons of raw sewage.

The environment agency, the MCA and local police are all involved with the incident as well as the local harbourmaster.
