Chichester Harbour Rescue

Solent Coastguard were contacted at 1.00 pm today to report that the motorboat, Rochford was on fire in Chichester Harbour. The Coastguard then received a mayday broadcast from another vessel Eskimo reporting that they were alongside the motorboat and taking off its four crew. The Coastguard contacted Hayling RNLI Lifeboat who were already on their way towards the boat as they had been patrolling in the harbour. The motorboat crew were taken off Eskimo by the lifeboat crew and taken to Northney Marina. They were cold but otherwise unharmed.

Fire fighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue were taken to the burning boat by Hayling Rescue Boat as it drifted towards shore. Hayling RNLI lifeboat, Portsmouth Inshore Lifeboat and Chichester Harbour Patroll all provided a cordon. Portsmouth inshore lifeboat then transferred the fire fighters back ashore as the vessel approached Conigar Point. The vessel is now grounded off Conigar Point and fire fighters are still on scene. Hayling Coastguard Rescue Team, Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the Portsmouth Coastguard Sector Manager have been assisting with communications and other shoreside requirements.

Tony Wheeler, Solent Coastguard Watch Manager said:

"The four men, who were all local and in their 50s and 60s, were rescued within minutes of the fire starting and I am pleased to say that they are unharmed."
